Journal 2 - About Us

Hi readers,

Thanks for checking back in. We hope you’ve been able to have a thorough look at the website as we rev up to open our store. We wanted to focus this journal post on who Eco Design Theory is and what motivated us to create this website.

Eco Design Theory is a women owned business created by me - Emily Montoya. I‘ve always noticed how much plastic fills our lives. From every snack purchased, takeaway ordered, package shipped, art supplies or even plant bought, there has been some form of plastic used. Then, after working in the interior plant world I became disenfranchised by the amount of plastic used in an industry that relies on Mother Nature for their products and in order to create biophilic designs. It was humbling to see that not even this industry cared about the output of plastic and its effects on the environment.

I’ve always been someone who found peace and eventually a sense of spirituality in Nature. From a young age I enjoyed spending my time outdoors and revered the beauty Mother Nature provides us. Growing up my parents would take time during the summer for a camping trip. My two brothers and I enjoyed activities such as hiking, canoeing, boating and fishing. In the outdoor world, there is a saying “Leave it better than you found it.” This concept encompasses a future thinking mind frame, as it considers the ability for future generations to enjoy the beauty of Nature as pristinely as we were privileged to.

By creating Eco Design Theory my hope is to start a small ripple that will eventually grow into a wave of eco conscious living products you can be proud to display in your home, and without any guilt if (aka when) it ends up in the landfill. Not only will this benefit those around today, but also the future beings that will inherit the earth. Chief Seattle was quoted as saying “The Earth does not belong to us, we belong to the Earth.” Every generation eventually becomes a steward to Earth and we owe it to ourselves and our future selves to move towards more mindful ways of consuming.

In order to move towards this revolution, perfection is not needed. Like any long lasting habit built, it is important to start small. Maybe you decide to minimize plastic use in your laundry room by swapping bottled soap for tablets, and laundry sheets for wool laundry balls. Or maybe the changes you make are in your grocery buying practices where instead of purchasing items wrapped in plastic you choose alternatives in paper or canned goods.

Please continue checking back in with us as we trek this new path towards mindful ways of consuming. We are new to this world so if you know of any artists or producers that align with our goal, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!

Thank you for taking the time to visit and we hope to see you again.
