Journal 5 - Winter Renewal
Living in a world that prioritizes financial growth over basic human needs can be seen in the chronic burnout each generation seems to be suffering from in one way or another. In order to realign ourselves we should look to nature to help set the pace. Seasons exist for this purpose. They allow for periods of transformations and growth, and periods for rest and rejuvenation. Winter is the perfect opportunity to slow down and reassess your position and direction in life. It is the period of the year that allows for decomposition of the fallen leaves that lay a foundation for healthy new life when spring comes. For us the things we may need to lay to rest include old ideologies that keep us from evolving as individuals and holds our species in an eternal war with one another. Bigotry, sexism, racism, fascism…are all things that should be left behind to decay this winter.
In terms of the environment - we are continuing to live outside of means in how we use our resources. Our economy is full of linear thinking that is ultimately unsustainable as it does not take into consideration the end life of products. We end up with more and more waste with no long term sustainable solutions being implemented at the grand scale it is needed. Adopting a holistic and circular form of thinking that allows for regrowth is what we need to strive for as caregivers of the natural world. Most people do not see themselves in this way, but we have an obligation to realign ourselves with nature for the betterment of all living creatures on Earth. When we take the time to slow down, stop purchasing, stop consuming, stop posting, and just pause - we allow for Mother Nature to have a period of renewal.
This winter take the time to slow down and recommit to the environment by changing one of these habits in your life -
Compulsive purchasing - cancel that Amazon subscription and start practicing more mindful purchasing. Opt for repurposing existing items or finding a way to live without.
Focus on local - Instead of driving across the city or county to go to that restaurant or amusement park, give the roads, environment and your wallet a break by going local. Walk to a local restaurant or park to spend time with family and loved ones.
Nurture nature - Help support nature by encouraging environmental processes that allow for renewal. Depending on your climate this could look like leaving fallen leaves to decompose and add nutrient back into the ground or holding off on dead-heading plants that provide shelter for insects and nutrients to small animals and birds.
Winter is an important season. Embrace the opportunity to shed old versions of yourself to make space for positive change. Slow down not only for you, but for the benefit of the environment. Recommit to nature.
Sincerely,
E.M.
